Detoxification: Why now?
Did you know that today there are more than 72,000 toxic chemicals found in our environment – in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and in the soil that provides us with our food? In 2004, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) reported a benchmark study on the umbilical cords of newborn babies in hospitals in the United States which found 287 different toxic pesticides and chemicals circulating in the cord connecting baby and mother. Of the 287 chemicals, 180 of them are known carcinogens, and 217 of them are known toxins to the brain and central nervous system (EWG, 2005).
We live in this polluted environment, and we have to be intelligent about periodically eliminating these toxic substances from our bodies before they cause irreparable damage leading to life-threatening diseases such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and autoimmune disorders.
We have built-in complex detoxification systems that work constantly to transform these dangerous substances and minimize their destructive potential at the cellular level; however, when the toxic load, the total amount of toxins in the body is greater than the body’s capacity to neutralize and eliminate them, chronic illness follows, and the quality of health declines.
There is mounting evidence that after World War II and the “New Age of Industrial Chemistry,” as defined by Dr. Elson Haas, millions of new chemicals and synthetic substances have bombarded our planet and exposed us to thousands of chemicals that the body has not learned how to detoxify (Haas, E.M., 1992). Our bodies have not had the time to adapt to this onslaught of new chemicals, and this increased toxic load has directly and adversely affected the health of the earth itself and all living being (Krohn, J., & Taylor, F, 2000).
Summer is a great time to cleanse. The warmer weather and abundance of nutrient-dense, liver-supporting fresh fruits and vegetables (like lemons, fresh fruits, parsley, and dark green leafy vegetables) provide extra support for purifying the body. This summer, focus on fresh, organic, fruits and vegetables to flood your body with the nutrients it needs for this detoxification process to occur. Drink nutrient-rich fresh vegetable juices, healthy broths, and herbal teas.
A simple, effective, and safe detoxification program can provide the specific nutrients needed to support the body’s two-phase detoxification process in the liver (the body’s key detoxification organ) and other organs. This kind of targeted nutrition assists these systems in the breakdown and removal of the dangerous toxins from the body.
Detoxification is part of the body’s normal functioning. It occurs every moment, every day, and in every cell. Cooperating with this natural process will serve to purify you in body, mind, and spirit. You will feel lighter, more balanced, cleansed, and yet full. Most likely, you will lose weight, have less congestion, enjoy a more radiant complexion, think more clearly, and have increased energy and itality.
So, go ahead. Use these warm summer months to cleanse, rejuvenate, and delight in the delicious fruits and vegetables available during this season!
